Don’t Wait for Fall: Why You Need a Summer Roof Inspection
When it comes to roof maintenance, timing matters. Many homeowners think fall is the best time to schedule repairs or inspections—but waiting until the end of the season can cost you more than you think.
According to McCoy Roofing’s Operations Manager, Paul Browne, summer offers some key advantages for keeping your roof in great shape—before problems become costly.

Early Roof Repairs: How a Summer Inspection Saves You Money
“If you’re waiting until fall or winter, what could be a small repair in summer could be a big repair in the winter,” Paul says.
That’s because water left to sit or seep under shingles can freeze once temperatures drop, expanding and creating gaps in your roofing materials. The longer it goes unaddressed, the more likely it is to damage your roof decking—and even your home’s interior.
“You might see what could be a small problem become a big problem,” Paul explains. “That’s the main thing: you can catch problems quicker in the summer.”
Benefits of a Summer Roof Inspection
Aside from beating the freeze-thaw cycle, summer inspections come with a few other major advantages:
- Dry weather = better visibility
- Less debris = more accurate assessments
- No leaves or snow covering critical areas
- Safer walking conditions for roofers and inspectors
“Regular inspections help the longevity of your roof,” Paul says. “It’s better to be proactive than reactive.”
That’s why McCoy Roofing recommends at least one to two roof inspections a year—especially after storms or high heat.
What to Check During a Summer Roof Inspection
Paul points out that roof health isn’t just about shingles. Your gutters, soffit vents, and roof penetrations all play critical roles in protecting your home.
“People tend to not look at their gutters until there’s an issue,” he says. But clogged gutters can back up under the shingles and cause damage to the fascia and eventually the interior.
He also recommends walking around your home to inspect soffit vents (the intake vents under your eaves). If they’re clogged with debris, nests, dust, or even paint, then airflow is restricted—leading to moisture buildup and winter ceiling stains.
“And check all the penetrations in the roof to make sure they’re sealed up properly,” Paul adds. “During the winter, that’s usually where a leak can come in.” Think chimneys, exhaust pipes, and anything sticking up through the shingles.
Why a Summer Roof Inspection Is a Smart Investment
“Most people don’t get an inspection until they find a problem,” Paul says. “But usually, if they’re waiting, the cost of repair is more than if they had addressed it beforehand.”
In other words, a quick inspection now could save you from a major repair later.
